Hong Kong is such a melting pot of the old and the new, the flashy and the laid back. During the day, when sightseeing, feel free to dress casually. Wear whatever is comfortable for the potentially hot and humid days. At night, if you are going to one of the clubs or fancy restaurants, be sure to dress up.
It depends on what you are looking to do. You will see more “local city life” in Kowloon, with most of the street markets on this side of the country. Also, the Hong Kong skyline is absolutely gorgeous and is best seen from Kowloon. However, most of the “action,” like nightlife and restaurants, will be on the Hong Kong side. You can’t make a bad choice, though, as the two are connected by fast and inexpensive taxis, one stop on the clean and efficient subway, and the iconic 37-cent Star Ferry ride.
Hong Kong is a very English-friendly area. All of the street signs are written in English and Chinese, and the subway stops are written and spoken in many different languages, including English. Most of the locals will have an elementary understanding of English to point you in the right direction. If you are looking to go somewhere by taxi, ask the hotel concierge to write down the name of the destination in Chinese.
