In-country flights are quite common. You’ll need to take a short one-hour flight to get from Lima to Cusco and Machu Picchu. We recommend taking the earliest flights in the day possible. Because the weather can sometimes get worse as the day progresses, flight delays are much more common in the afternoon.
It can be for some travelers. If you are traveling to Machu Picchu (elevation of 11,000+ feet), we recommend heading straight to the Sacred Valley (9,000 ft) and spending a few nights there to get acclimated. From there, ascend into Machu Picchu and Cusco.
Many tourists can get turned off of Lima because, at first glance, it looks like your typical Latin American big city with traffic, congestion, and pollution. But the real gem in Lima is the Rafael Larco Herrera Museum. It is a must-see for first-time visitors! It provides a wonderful education for all of the Inka cultures. Their art and artifact collection is world-renowned. They also have a truly authentic café at the museum that serves lunch and dinner. The garden setting and genuine local menu make it a delightful entrance for your first day in Peru.
